Halitosis - Bad Breath

What is halitosis?

Halitosis, commonly known as bad breath, is a persistent unpleasant odor that can affect one's social life. It may go undetected by some but is easily recognized by dental professionals. Pseudo halitosis refers to the fear of having bad breath even when none is present. If you're concerned, consult your dentist as halitosis is common and often treatable.

What causes bad breath

In 80-90% of cases, bad breath originates in the mouth due to bacteria breaking down food debris, saliva, and plaque, releasing foul-smelling gases. Poor oral hygiene, gum diseases like gingivitis or periodontitis, and bacteria on the tongue can worsen the condition. Smoking, certain foods, coffee, alcohol, medications, and medical conditions also contribute.

Treating bad breath

Effective treatment often includes good oral hygiene—brushing twice a day, cleaning between teeth, and using a tongue cleaner to reduce bacteria.

How to prevent bad breath

The most efficient way to prevent bad breath is to maintain a good daily oral hygiene routine.
- Brush your teeth with a gentle toothbrush with fluoride toothpaste twice a day.
- Use an interdental brush or dental floss to clean between the teeth, where the most bacteria hide.
- Use a tongue cleaner to remove bacteria from the tongue surface
Visit your dentist regularly for a check-up of your oral hygiene.
